The Invitation:
It was around evening when Lucas Carter picked up his phone and dialed Emily Davis, following their usual routine. Mid-conversation, Emily’s voice suddenly carried a mix of surprise and excitement.
“Lucas… you won’t believe this,” Emily said, her voice slightly trembling. “I just received a strange letter. It says I need to be at the Joyland Amusement Park by 7 PM today. Some kind of adventure game!”
Lucas paused for a second, then chuckled. “Seriously? I got the exact same letter!”
Right then, Christine Parker’s voice chimed in from the background, as she was with Emily. “Wait! What are you guys talking about? I got that letter too!”
One by one, the rest of the crew—Ethan, Ryan, Noah, and Bella—joined a group video call. Their faces on the screen were filled with shock and excitement. When everyone realized they all received the same black-bordered envelope, any initial skepticism vanished.
“It must be some massive prize or a secret VIP party,” Ryan said enthusiastically. “Think about it, Joyland’s rides all to ourselves!”
Bella Morgan hesitated, trying to back out. “Guys, I don’t know… heading out to that old, abandoned park this late feels really sketchy.”
But the rest of the group shut her down immediately. “Oh, come on, don’t be a coward! You can’t miss this kind of adventure,” Noah teased. Finally, Bella gave in.
Shortly after, they hit the road in two vehicles—Lucas Carter’s sleek sports car leading the way, followed closely by Christine Parker’s car cutting through the dark streets. They had no idea they weren’t heading toward a game of fun, but rather walking right into a 15-year-old trap of reckoning.
Arriving at the gates of Joyland, all seven of them gathered and greeted each other.
“Man, I am so excited for this game and whatever the grand prize is!” Lucas Carter said, rubbing his hands together with a grin.
Ethan Brooks and Christine Parker nodded in agreement. “Same here, we’re totally ready for this adventure,” they chimed in.
However, Bella Morgan was different—she was more reserved and not interested in any of this creepy scavenger hunt nonsense. “You guys go ahead, I’ll just wait right here in the car,” Bella told them, crossing her arms.
The rest of the group tried to push her. “Oh, come on, don’t be a party pooper, get in with us!” they urged. But Bella stubbornly refused, hopped back into the car, locked the doors, and put on her headphones to listen to music.
Leaving Bella behind in the car, the remaining six—Lucas, Ethan, Ryan, Noah, Christine, and Emily—pushed open the creaking iron gates and stepped inside the dark, abandoned amusement park.
As they stepped inside, a football ground lay right in front of them with a football resting in the center.
Ethan eagerly bolted toward it, wound up his leg, and smashed a powerful kick toward the goalpost while shouting in excitement.
Thud!
Instead of a ball, his foot collided with a solid, unyielding stone shaped and painted to look like a football. A sharp crack echoed through the quiet park as Ethan collapsed to the ground, clutching his broken foot and screaming in agony.
The rest of the group burst into laughter, thinking he had just made a fool of himself with a clumsy kick—completely unaware that the twisted game had already claimed its first casualty.
Ethan limped along as they moved deeper into the park, when suddenly all of their phones buzzed simultaneously with a text message: “Go deeper into the park and hide. Whoever remains hidden till the end wins $50,000. You all have 10 minutes to hide.”
Ethan winced in pain and said, “You guys go ahead, I know a secret spot nearby, I’ll hide there.” The rest of the group hurried further inside, leaving Ethan behind in the ground. Just then, with a loud metallic click, both the main entrance gate and the ground’s internal gate locked shut, trapping Ethan inside the field.
Forcing himself up, Ethan hurried over to the audience stands and crouched down between the rows of chairs in a doggy-style position to stay hidden. Suddenly, a masked figure emerged silently from behind, grabbed Ethan tightly by the neck, slit his throat with a large sharp knife, and propped his lifeless body up neatly over the back of the chair.
Shortly after, all their phones buzzed with another message: “Be careful where you step, traps have been set across the park.”
Ignoring the warning, Noah Bennett found himself near a large trampoline area and, thinking it was just part of the game or a chance to mess around, he jumped right onto it.
The moment his feet hit the bouncing surface, a mechanical trigger snapped. A barrage of large, sharp knives shot straight up through the trampoline mesh, piercing through his legs and driving deep into his stomach. Noah choked on his own blood, dying instantly on the bouncing pad.
Meanwhile, the rest of the group was entirely consumed by panic and the race to find a secure hiding spot. Engulfed in their own survival, none of them had any idea that Ethan and Noah were already dead.
Just then, Emily Davis caught sight of a strange figure wearing a creepy rabbit mask, holding two large, menacing knives in its hands. Panicking, she immediately typed out a warning message to the rest of the group chat.
Right at that moment, the 10-minute timer hit zero.
A loud, distorted siren echoed across the abandoned grounds, and the Rabbit masked killer began roaming through the dark amusement park, actively hunting down the remaining players.
The Rabbit slowly dragged its feet across the grounds, stepping into the eerie gaming zone, but found no one hiding there. Moving further, it entered the park’s indoor shopping mall. Emily Davis was hiding right there inside, holding her breath.
The killer methodically searched the aisles. Suddenly, the masked figure lunged forward and brutally stabbed a large knife straight into the stomach of a nearby mannequin. Terrified by the sudden strike, Emily—who was standing disguised right beside it as another mannequin—gasped in horror and bolted toward the exit.
She slammed against the exit door, but it was locked shut. Before she could turn around, the killer hurled a heavy knife from behind. The blade sliced through the air, plunging deep into her lower back and bursting straight out through her abdomen.
As Emily collapsed, gasping for air, the killer calmly strode over and drove the knife into her 3 or 4 more times, ending her life before walking away into the shadows.
Moving on, the killer headed toward the swings section. Ryan was hiding right there among the structures. The masked figure searched the area thoroughly, and suddenly kicked one of the swings violently out of frustration.
Startled by the crash, Ryan panicked, bolted from his hiding spot, shoved the killer hard out of his way, and scrambled toward the large slide swing to slide down to safety.
However, he had no idea what waited at the bottom. As he sped down the slide, a mechanical trap triggered, and sharp iron rods shot straight up from the surface. The thick spikes pierced straight through Ryan’s body, killing him instantly on the spot.
While the killer was roaming around searching for the remaining survivors, Christine Parker accidentally tripped over something in the dark and fell hard, her head crashing into a fire extinguisher that slammed right into the killer’s face and knocked him to the ground.
Panic-stricken, Christine scrambled away and hid inside a massive pit filled with large foam blocks.
Regaining his footing, the masked killer stalked over to the foam pit and leaped right into the middle of it. Without missing a beat, he began plunging his knives randomly deep into the soft foam blocks.
Muffled screams pierced the air as the blades found their mark. Moments later, the killer sliced open her throat and tossed her lifeless body aside.
It had been quite a while since the others had gone inside. Feeling uneasy, Bella finally stepped out of the car and pushed open the park’s main entrance to check on them. An eerie, dead silence hung heavy over the football ground. The main gate behind her was locked shut.
High up in the commentary box, the Rabbit masked figure stood motionless, watching her every move through the glass.
Suddenly, Bella’s eyes drifted toward the audience seating area. She spotted Ethan slumped over a chair. A warm, relieved smile spread across her face as she thought he was just playing a prank or resting.
“Ethan? What are you guys doing?” she called out, starting to walk toward him.
But as she stepped closer, the horrible reality set in. She saw that his neck was completely severed and his head was grotesquely propped up. A blood-curdling scream tore through her throat, echoing across the abandoned park.
Hearing her piercing shriek, Lucas Carter bolted out from the shadows of the indoor area. Sprinting toward her, he grabbed her arm in sheer panic and yelled, “Bella, stop screaming! They’re all dead! We need to run right now, before it kills us too!”
As Lucas tried to quiet Bella down and urge her toward the exit, heavy footsteps echoed from the opposite end, and the masked killer emerged, slowly closing in on them.
Pushing Bella safely behind him, Lucas squared his shoulders and prepared to fight. As the killer lunged forward, Lucas unleashed a flurry of powerful punches and kicks to its face and stomach. For a brief moment, Lucas managed to dominate the brawl, pushing the attacker back.
But the killer recovered instantly. With lightning speed, it drove a sharp knife deep into Lucas’s abdomen. Lucas gasped, coughing up blood, and collapsed hard onto the ground.
Bella Morgan watched in sheer horror, tears streaming down her face as she shook uncontrollably. The killer slowly stood back up over Lucas’s dying body and, right in front of Bella’s eyes, casually slit his throat.
Paralyzed by bone-chilling fear, Bella broke down completely, sobbing hysterically. Her legs turned to lead, and the intense terror kept her completely frozen—she couldn’t even summon the strength to run away.
The killer slowly stalked closer to Bella, stopping until it was standing right in front of her. For a terrifying, breathless second, the masked figure dropped both of its bloody knives to the ground with a dull clatter.
Slowly, the Rabbit reached up and placed both of its hands gently on Bella’s tear-stained cheeks.
The killer pulled the crying Bella into a warm, gentle embrace. A moment later, the masked figure stepped back, pulled out a delicate heart-shaped locket necklace, and carefully fastened it around her neck. Giving her one last lingering look, the killer turned and walked away into the shadows.
As the figure disappeared down the dark path, Bella gathered every ounce of courage left in her trembling body and called out, “Harry.”
The Rabbit stopped in its tracks, turned its head back slowly for a final glance, and then vanished completely into the depths of the abandoned amusement park.
Sirens wailed in the distance, and moments later, police cars swarmed the entrance. When the officers questioned Bella about the killer’s identity, she hesitated, keeping the truth to herself, and simply whispered that she didn’t know because he was wearing a mask.
One month later, a mysterious letter arrived at Bella’s doorstep containing a heartfelt confession, a note of gratitude, and a bank check for $50,000.
Sitting at her desk, Bella calmly typed the final sentence of her debut psychological thriller novel:
“At last, the killer had finally taken his ultimate revenge for the childhood school bullying.”
*THE END*
